Before you’re around friends and loved ones this holiday season, protect them and yourself with a flu vaccination.

The holidays are a fun time to be with family and friends. We travel to see loved ones and gather for meals and celebrations. But being around lots of people also means germs can spread more easily. One of the most common illnesses during the holidays is the flu. That’s why getting a flu shot before the holidays is a smart way to stay healthy.

How does the flu spread?

The flu spreads when people cough, sneeze or even talk. You can catch it by touching things like doorknobs or toys that have germs on them. That’s why it’s easy to get the flu when you’re around a lot of people — such as at holiday parties, school events or while traveling.

Why get a flu shot?

The best way to protect yourself from the flu is to get a flu shot. The flu shot helps your body fight the virus if you come into contact with it. It doesn’t guarantee you won’t get sick, but it makes it less likely. And if you do get the flu, the shot can help you feel less sick and recover faster.

Doctors and health experts say everyone 6 months and older should get a flu shot every year. It’s especially important for people who are more likely to get very sick from the flu, including:

  • Babies and young children
  • Older adults
  • Pregnant women
  • People with health problems such as asthma or diabetes

Even if you’re healthy, getting the flu shot helps protect those around you — grandparents, babies or friends who may have compromised immune systems.

When should you get it?

The flu season usually starts in the fall and lasts through the winter. The best time to get your flu shot is before the end of October. But if you haven’t gotten it yet, it’s not too late! You can still get the shot before the holidays and be protected.

It takes about two weeks after getting the shot for your body to build up protection, so don’t wait until the last minute. Get your flu shot now so you’re ready for Thanksgiving and other winter holidays.

Where can you get a flu shot?

Flu shots are easy to get. You can go to:

  • Your doctor’s office
  • Local clinics or health centers
  • Pharmacies
  • Some schools or workplaces

Many places offer flu shots for free or at a low cost, you just have to check.

Other ways to stay healthy

Getting a flu shot is the most important step, but here are other ways to stay healthy during the holidays:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water.
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
  • Stay home if you feel sick.
  • Avoid touching your face, especially your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Eat healthy foods and get plenty of sleep.

Make health part of your holiday plan

The holidays are about joy, love and spending time together. But they’re also a time when flu and other germs can spread quickly. Getting your flu shot is a simple way to protect yourself and others. It helps make sure you can enjoy the season without getting sick.

So before you decorate or pack your suitcase, get a flu shot. It’s a gift of wellness for you and everyone you care about.
