March 1, 2019

By Joseph Aigner-Varoz

March is National Social Work Month.  During the entire month, we celebrate Social Workers across WellMed and across the nation to recognize their contributions to those in need of support and advocacy.  We celebrate our Health Information Professionals Week from 24 – 30 March, and on March 30th, Doctor’s Day, we also recognize our amazing doctors who tirelessly provide outstanding, compassionate care to our patients every day.

National Professional Social Work Month

Social Workers focus on helping people in many ways, and are skilled in enhancing and helping with the basic needs of the most vulnerable in our communities.

According to the National Association of Social Workers, this year’s theme, “Elevate Social Work, is an opportunity for social workers across the country to turn the spotlight on the profession and highlight the important contributions they make to society.”

Health Information Professionals Week

Health Information professionals are key to ensuring our patient data is accurate and secure for our use in providing care with the best clinical outcomes.

National Doctor’s Day

Eudora Brown Almond, wife of Dr. Charles Almond, came up with the idea of a day to honor physicians by placing red Carnations on the graves of deceased doctors.  She chose March 30, 1842 which is the anniversary of the first time Ether (general anesthesia) was used in surgery.

The United States House of Representatives adopted a resolution in March 1958 to observe Doctor’s Day, and in October 1990, President Bush officially designated March 30th as National Doctor’s Day.

Take some time to recognize and thank our dedicated Social Workers, Health Information professionals and Doctors for providing outstanding care to change the face of healthcare delivery for the nation.
